Apply for a 2010 - 2011 Exchange Now

How do you feel about the option of an online exchange between classes, supervised by the teachers?
I would be interested in a virtual exchange supported by video conferencing and other interactive media.
I would not be interested in an online exchange.

The Impact of Exchanges
We can never underestimate the importance and relevance of SEVEC’s reciprocal, homestay exchanges. We are reminded over and over by participants, both youth and group organizers, of the impact of their experiences. Wayne Van Sickle, one of the group organizers of a recent exchange between Moose Kerr School (Aklavik, NT) and Immaculata High School (Ottawa, ON) wrote:

"The SEVEC exchange was incredibly powerful for the community of Aklavik. We continue to see significant and positive changes in the behaviour, attitude and work ethic of the participant students. Two of our students have enrolled in Grant MacEwan University in Edmonton for the fall, partly as a result of our visiting the University and sleeping at its residence during our Edmonton stopover (thank you for that opportunity). These are the first students from the community to go to Southern Canada for Post-Secondary education in several years. The energy from this exchange will be felt in the community for several years to come"

The Moose Kerr – Immaculata exchange is the feature exchange of the summer. Learn why this exchange was ‘… Something Completely Different’.

Ashna Hammad-Asim, Roch Carrier Short Story Award Winner

This year, many students from grades seven to 10 wrote, in their second language, about their experience as a Canadian. We are pleased to announce that the winning entry comes from Ashna Hammad-Asim of Sydney, Nova Scotia. Ashna, a grade eight core French student at Harbourview Montessori School, described her move to Canada from Africa at a young age and how she became ‘truly Canadian’ by learning to downhill ski. Mr. Roch Carrier will travel to Sydney to present Ashna with her prize while visiting her school in June. Congratulations, Ashna!

Ashna’s winning story is posted on the Roch Carrier Short Story Award website.

DID YOU KNOW?

Did you know that participating in an exchange, even for a week, offers significant linguistic gains and increases the motivation of second language learners?

Learn more by reading English-French School Group Exchanges in Canada and Their Impact.

English-French School Group Exchanges in Canada and Their Impact 2009

As was the case 10 years ago (MacFarlane, 1999), a recent study by Callie Mady PhD, Nipissing University, found there were gains in exchange participants’ second-language motivation and skills, regardless of differences in second-language programs. This consistency in findings across programs and years strongly supports the case for provision of an exchange experience for all Canadian youth.

How Schools and Communities Can
Foster Multicultural Inclusiveness

sk-forum-group-photo-sm_en

On April 19, 20 and 21st 2010, 47 students from around Saskatchewan were brought together to have honest discussions on multiculturalism in our communities. The group consisted of students from both urban and rural centres, public schools, private schools, and religion based schools. They represented a spectrum of cultures from First Nations to recently landed immigrants.

To get a good sense of what students thought on this important topic, before attending the forum, participants surveyed 5 or more students to get their views on eight questions. Read their responses here.

Read the report  to learn more about the role that students, schools, communities, and government can play in fostering inclusiveness.
